What is it about black, brown or mixed women’s hair that attracts us so much? AFRODISIAQUE is a conversation, a reflection, a wound and a healing of our silenced roots. This one-woman show gives voice to afro hair. Sometimes magical or tragic: through many bodies, stories and words come and meet Rhizome.
AFRODISIAQUE is a theatrical one-woman show that demonstrates how the texture of black, brown and mixed women’s hair has an influence and an incident on how they are perceived and treated in today’s society.
During the end of the year 1995, it was virtually impossible to go anywhere without hearing the soulful, streetwise strains of “Gangsta’s Paradise” blasting out of somebody’s radio. Distinguished by Coolio‘s thoughtful lyrics and distinctive verbal flow, the song is a deeply affecting listening experience. Design of a Legacy
The musician, whose full name was Artis Leon Ivey Jr. found incredible success with the Grammy Award-winning song "Gangsta's Paradise," and through his debut album, "It Takes a Thief," released in 1994 and which featured the song "Fantastic Voyage." Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" sold 6 million copies and won the best solo rap performance Grammy in 1996 after it was featured in Michelle Pfeiffer's 1995 film "Dangerous Minds.
Propelling him to international fame, it remained at number one on the US Billboard charts for three weeks and earned him a Grammy for best solo rap performance.
Capitalizing on the success of the single and the album of the same name to a mainstream career that included three more top 40 hits and two songs on the “Space Jam” soundtrack.
Coolio also parlayed his fame into dozens of movie roles, including an appearance in 1997′s “Batman & Robin,” starring George Clooney.
Coolio's star dimmed somewhat from the mainstream after the 1990s, but the rapper keep himself busy and never really went away, reinventing himself as a performer in a new genre. Remaining in the limelight by writing a cooking book while appearing in shows, like Futurama, Charmed, Sabrina The Teenage Witch, Tyrone, Midnight Mas and Big Brother also features soundtracks, he provided the opening track Aw, Here It Goes! for the TV series Kenan & Kel.However, lately he has focused on charity work with organizations such as the Asthma Foundation.In addition to his book, Coolio has taken his culinary career to the small screen, having appeared on the Food Network, as well as a web series, "Cookin' With Coolio.
Coolio Remembered
Sadly, he passed away suddenly on September 28, 2022, as per Vibe magazine, CNN. He was 59.
The news of his death was confirmed by Coolio’s representatives.
“We are saddened by the loss of our dear friend and client, Coolio, who passed away this afternoon,” they said in a statement. “He touched the world with the gift of his talent and will be missed profoundly
