As part of the ongoing programming of Black History Month, a one-women show by actress and artist Maryline Chery is presented. Featuring controversial observations about black women's hair.

Dans le cadre de la programmation continue du mois de 'histoire des Noire Un one women show par actrice et artiste Maryline Chery est présenter. Méttant en vedettes les milles et une observations sur les cheveux de la femme noire.       

What is it about black, brown or mixed women’s hair that attracts us so much? AFRODISIAQUE is a conversation, a reflection, a wound and a healing of our silenced roots. This one-woman show gives voice to afro hair. Sometimes magical or tragic: through many bodies, stories and words come and meet Rhizome.

AFRODISIAQUE is a theatrical one-woman show that demonstrates how the texture of black, brown and mixed women’s hair has an influence and an incident on how they are perceived and treated in today’s society.

This performance will be performed in French. Presented the 9th  to 17th February at  Maison Culturelle et Communautaire de Montréal-Nord (MCC) For more see Montreal Events and Le point de vente.

Tennis superstar, a four-time major champion and former world No. 1  Naomi Osaka Following in the footsteps of other superstar athletes like Serena Williams and Stephen Curry, announced via her Instagram the launching of her first children’s book, The Way Champs Play, published by HarperCollins via Hana Kuma, her co-owned media company, built in partnership with NBA star LeBron James. 

The book brings Osaka's lessons from her many years on the tennis court to young readers, particularly girls, hoping to get into sports. The Way Champs Play focuses on the virtues that playing sports can teach young children, such as patience, determination, and sportsmanship

“The leadership, confidence, teamwork, and resilience I’ve learned on the court have been so valuable to me and that’s why I am so excited about my new book,” Osaka said in a release.

The upcoming picture book, The Way Champs Play,  illustrated by Kamala Nair, will be published on December 6th. Osaka said a portion of the proceeds would go towards her Play Academy foundation.

During the end of the year 1995, it was virtually impossible to go anywhere without hearing the soulful, streetwise strains of “Gangsta’s Paradise” blasting out of somebody’s radio. Design of a Legacy 

The musician, whose full name was Artis Leon Ivey Jr. found incredible success with the Grammy Award-winning song "Gangsta's Paradise," and through his debut album, "It Takes a Thief," released in 1994 and which featured the song "Fantastic Voyage." Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" sold 6 million copies and won the best solo rap performance Grammy in 1996 after it was featured in Michelle Pfeiffer's 1995 film "Dangerous Minds.

Propelling him to international fame, it remained at number one on the US Billboard charts for three weeks and earned him a Grammy for best solo rap performance.

Capitalizing on the success of the single and the album of the same name to a mainstream career that included three more top 40 hits and two songs on the “Space Jam” soundtrack.

 Sadly, he passed away suddenly on September 28, 2022, as per Vibe magazine, CNN. He was 59.

The news of his death was confirmed by Coolio’s representatives.

“We are saddened by the loss of our dear friend and client, Coolio, who passed away this afternoon,” they said in a statement. “He touched the world with the gift of his talent and will be missed profoundly

“Thank you to everyone worldwide who has listened to his music and to everyone who has been reaching out regarding his passing. Please have Coolio’s loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.”

Tributes from the music world immediately poured in for the late rapper.

Sharing a clip from the music video on Instagram, Pfeiffer said she was "heartbroken" over a "life cut entirely too short".

Rokhaya, a film student in Switzerland, returns to her home in Senegal to make a film about Aline Sitoé Diatta, her ancestor, who is a symbol of resilience and freedom and was believed to have the magical power to bring the rain. Throughout her research, which consists of interviews with local personalities, several casting sessions, discussions with her team, and fictional scenes shot on location, we discover the compelling story of a fascinating hero of our times.

In this conversation, young filmmaker Rokhaya Marieme Balde tells Longshots Festival why she returned to her home in Senegal to make a film about Aline Sitoe Diatta, an inspiring historical figure with a surprising background, who happens to be her ancestor.
